Survey On Podcast Revolution

What Podcasting Revolution? Is a question asked by the Pew Internet & American Life Project whose report denies any revolution but show a meager increase or 7 % in terms of downloads or pod casts. Audio feed downloads have increased but it is not as regular as predicted when podcasting became popular. Podcasting is definitely popular and more than ever people are downloading audio files on to their music players or other electronic devices.

The study conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project was to find out how regular these downloads occur and how long. Roughly 12% of the group studied has downloaded audio files to listen at a later time. Most of them tuning into podcasts and sampling shows rather than subscribing or regularly listening to show. On any typical day only 1 % of the persons polled downloaded podcasts.

This study only affirms the previous Forrester Research that was done earlier in the year, which published that only 2 % of North American Internet users have tried podcasts and only 1% tune in regularly.

Podtrac's co-founder and CEO, Mark McCrery works with the group that produces "This Week in Tech". he points out that this podcast and even "Ask a Ninja" have established audiences that tune in regularly. Most users are still shopping around and sampling and when the sampling end podcasting is hoped to start booming. Roughly the number of podcasts average around 40,000. Tuning in to a Podcast may rise when people finished searching out high quality podcasters.

Other research done by the diffusion group forecast around 11.4 to 21.7 million Americans to tune in, in the near future and 10% of those would download episodes via the internet. Presently most podcast traffic is driven through Apple iTunes' list: Top 100 podcasts which feature around half of the existing media companies.

Podcasting still has a long way to go. Still in its infancy it is yet to pose a threat to traditional media and it is highly unlikely too. It may just be one of the many different ways to get content in an increasingly mobile environment
