So, the first issue about a travel guide podcast is that it should maintain certain continuity. It doesn't mean that the podcast has to last forever. The idea is that it endures for some time, in order to acquire maturity, and that the podcast has a theme.
There are many reasons why someone would want to travel to another city or country. So, if the podcaster wants to gain an audience, he or she has to look for something that can create interest.
For example, it can be a travel podcast on good and cheap restaurants in the cities of the West Coast. Or it can be a podcast travel guide for 4 star hotels in the principal cities of Europe. Whatever the theme, the idea is that it can create some interest among the listeners.
The next really important thing about a podcast is a list. A podcast travel list is really useful since it tells you what you should take or not to a determined place. For example, how much money should you take, what kind of credit cards are accepted or if you should take mosquito repellent.

It depends on what you want to know and how much time you have available. If you don't have a specific interest, if you only want to know about the generalities of a country or a group of countries, then look for a podcast that has a more holistic view of things. However, if you want to taste the best wines in France, you will have to look for a specialized podcast.
Which takes us to the other issue: audio or video? The good thing about audio is that you can hear an audio podcast with the cheapest devices that are available in the market. On the other hand, an image can say more than a thousand words. If you hear a person saying how wonderful the Kremlin is, you won't be able to make a clear picture in your mind. However, if you watch a video, then you will be able to appreciate all of its beauty.
Travel podcast videos can be of a great help. Although you will have to buy a device in order to watch them (like one of the newest iPod's or one of its competitors), they are worth your time. After all, there isn't much to do if you are traveling on plane or train. Thanks to travel podcasts you will be able to exploit your trip to its full capacity.
