The first, and the most important, tip when recording phone interviews for podcasting is to assure yourself that all the hardware is working perfectly. There is nothing more annoying for your listeners to find that your podcast can't be heard or that the conversation is all garbled. No one wants to spend his time trying to understand what a couple of people are saying. If it isn't easy to hear, they will turn the podcast off.

Record Phone interviews

If you don't know how to record phone interviews for podcast transmission, then look for a friend who has already done phone interviews podcasting. If you don't have a friend who does that kind of things, then look for someone in your college. Ask them to let you watch how they setup a phone interview for podcasting. It is the best way to learn this kind of things. Another way is through a book but it isn't as practical as the first one.

Another important advice is to control your emotions and limit your opinions. If you use your podcast for manifesting your point of view, it is highly probable that you won't last for long. The idea behind a podcast interview is to exploit the potential of the person that you are interviewing.

For example, let's say that you are interviewing a famous independent director. You need to be able to master your skills in order to make the interview interesting; not only for your listeners, but also for the movie director. If he feels comfortable with you, then he will make the interview a lot more interesting. Remember that no one likes to be in a hostile or uncomfortable environment.

Theme of Podcast

The theme is also an important aspect of a podcast. You need to know to whom is your podcast directed. Many people create a podcast in order to pursue their own interests. That may work sometimes. For example, The Space Show is a popular show that has been around 6 years uninterrupted. The host of the show is Dr. David Livingston, who is a pro space individual. He found that there were thousands of people in America that had the same interest.

However, Dr. Livingston doesn't limit himself to astronomy or space exploration. He talks about the space industry, which generates $180 billion in revenue each year. That attracts even more people, specially the new breed of space entrepreneurs. If you are an expert in a determined area, like Dr. Livingston is, you may find a niche market. Remember, though, that it isn't easy.

Podcast interviews can be done by almost anyone who has some basic computer knowledge. However, that doesn't assure a popular show. If you really want to excel in this new endeavor, you need to follow all the tips mentioned above. Otherwise, you will get tired and leave your phone interviews podcasting behind, among the hundreds of fellow podcasters who didn't manage to transcend the barrier of popularity.
