  • How pod casting helps education?
  • Will Pod casting help Students with Learning Differences?
  • Is the Software for Educational Pod casting any Different?
  • How Pod casting and Education is Linked
With podcast technology, education has embraced a powerful new instructional tool. Increasingly teachers are using podcasting in higher education as well as at lower grade levels to provide additional course content, to make a method of review and reinforcement available to students, and to involve students themselves in an interactive medium.

Although less likely to occur at the college level, students in high school and grade school might create a podcast as a class project or as an augmentation to or replacement for a school newspaper. This is the kind of interactive activity that gets kids interested and excited, communicating an energy into the classroom that is all too often lacking. While podcasts at the university level tend to be somewhat more utilitarian, their uses are no less exciting.

Will Podcasting help Students with Learning Differences?

Beyond the obvious use of podcasts as an important tool for students with visual impairments, the remedial value of the medium should not be discounted. There are many ways to learn. Some people must hear information over and over again to absorb it. A student who is provided with a good podcast of a lecture can use that tool as often as they need to get a working grasp of the material. Additionally, dyslexic students or those with other reading problems will benefit from the added auditory reinforcement.

Is the Software for Educational Podcasting any Different?

The software used to create podcasts for educational use is the same as that employed by any podcaster. Especially if the professor or teacher is producing their own content, Audacity is a good program with which to begin. Not only is the software free, there are versions offered for Windows, Mac OS 9 or X, and Linux/Unix. The software allows for the creation and manipulation of audio files within a short learning curve and has adequate advanced features as well. Download instructions for Audacity can be found at audacity.soundforge.net. (It should be noted that many Apple computers come preloaded with software called GarageBand that is an excellent tool to not only create but also to publish podcasts.)
