Anything Else I Should Know Before I Try To Podcast?
There are some things that prospective podcasters need to realize. Their programs will generate audio files and while most software products are geared toward minimizing file size with an eye toward rapid downloading, you will need adequate hard drive space on your computer or a way to archive your programs.
You will also need to have space on a web server to host both your files and the RSS podcast feeds that allows for the syndication of your podcast. It is customary for a podcast to have at least a rudimentary webpage as an introduction to the show and its host and perhaps as a place to post show notes for recent episodes. Often blogging or content management software will do nicely for this purpose.
In choosing a web host you want to make sure that you are getting adequate storage space for your programs and enough bandwidth to support the number of downloads you expect. As your audience grows, bandwidth may become a problem. Make sure your host has a program that will allow you to expand your bandwidth as needed at a good price.
If you are not familiar with managing a web site and uploading files to a server via FTP, you will want to consider a podcasting software studio that has modules to walk you through all of these steps.
There are also services like AudioBlog that will allow new podcasters to subscribe to an account and produce and host their programs all from a web interface.

If you've never run your own webpage, you may want to try this option first or find a web savvy friend who is willing to help you learn the ropes. Podcasting isn't difficult once you learn the steps but many people have a tendency to balk at first when more experienced podcasters start talking about RSS and FTP and the like. Do your homework. Take the process one step at a time and before you know it you'll be producing your own podcast content with no trouble at all.
Is Podcasting Expensive?
Although a good deal of the software necessary to produce and manage a podcast is free, it is not at all uncommon for someone to get hooked and start laying out money for better microphones, mixing boards, portable recorders, and the like. Start slow. Find out if podcasting really is something you are prepared to do on a regular basis.
Resist the urge to spend large amounts of money until you have a dozen or so shows under your belt and a decent audience of listeners.
Improvements in audio and video players for the public and refinements in podcasting tools mean this is not a passing phenomenon. These programs are here to stay and more and more people are listen to podcasting content every day. You can afford to take your time and explore becoming a podcast producer at your own pace.
