Streaming Pod Casts
Pod casters' web sites offer pod casts in either of two ways: direct download or streaming of their content.
Streaming pod casts is media that is heard or viewed while it is being delivered. Streaming is more a property of the delivery system than the medium itself. The distinction is usually applied to media that are distributed over computer networks; most other delivery systems are either inherently streaming (radio, television) or inherently non-streaming (books, video cassettes, audio CDs).
Streaming pod casts are multimedia data transferred in a stream of packets that are interpreted and rendered, in real time, by a software application as the packets arrive. This software application is capable of reading feed formats such as RSS.
Reliable protocols, such as the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), guarantee correct delivery of each bit in the media stream.
RealNetworks(R), Inc. launched Rhapsody Radio that provides high-quality streaming radio stations from Real's award-winning Rhapsody online music service, streaming pod casts, and music news and videos.
A concern that streaming broadcasters have is that copying streaming media would result in loss of sales. Therefore, they use streaming systems that interfere with the ability to record streams for later playback. However, there is no assured way to prevent a user from recording a media stream that has been delivered to their computer.
